There are days when everything just seems easy, like you've really got your shit together and everything is working exactly the way you want it to. Not today it seems. It's amazing just how many little issues creep up on you when you take a little holiday, and fool that I am, instead of dealing with all those issues first, I manage somehow to add a heap of new stuff that needs to get done.
I bought myself a new laptop recently. It's been over 6 years since my last major upgrade, which is something of an amazing record for me as I have always been in the habit of upgrading a system every 2 years, and tweaking things every 6 months or so. So in the last 6 years, the constant flow of hardware into my home has been seriously curtailed, and I found myself one afternoon cursing at how slow my old system had become.
The new laptop is just brilliant. More storage and memory than I ever wanted, multi-core CPU just to keep me happy, and Windows 7 dual booting with Chrome just for a little geek-cred. The thing is, that I have so much other stuff on my plate that I haven't been able to get around to sorting out all the problems I have with the new laptop. I've got connectivity issues with my old XP box and the Mac Mini that I use as a media center, I've got printer issues, driver issues, a whole lot of software that I need to find a way to upgrade simply for 64-bit compatibility, I need to get my camera and camcorder hooked into the system, and then to go trolling through the old system in order to find all of those files that I need to preserve, including those old folders that seem to be passed from system to system as a "backup" with stuff that I never seem to know what I really want to do with.
I did of course sort out the most important stuff. Hooked the laptop up for internet access, got my phone hooked into the laptop and Eclipse running with the Android development stuff so that I can code and then debug on my phone, and I made sure the laptop could hook into the TV via HDMI, simply to prove to myself that it would work... which it does by the way and the option of dual screen with a full HD TV is pretty bloody awesome. That leaves of course all the home and work related stuff that I've found myself seriously procrastinating about. I really shouldn't allow myself to get into a stressful bind because I've overloaded my schedule, but I guess I'm just a glutton for punishment, and all because (or so I keep telling myself), there simply isn't enough time to get it all done, so I have to prioritise and get this really important... ooooh, look at the new shiny gadget...!!
Oh well. It'll all get sorted by Christmas... or it won't... then by New Year I'll resolve to get better organised, get everything done, and then by about March I'll find myself back where I started simply because I find it too easy getting distracted by all the new stuff that keeps cropping up in my life. Still, I suppose I really should finish editing the wedding video, and organise the wedding photos, since I promised my wife I'd get it done soon. Yes, it seems there are some things that should never be procrastinated about if you want your life to be worth living! :-P
